Bandwidth
- A measurement of the amount of time it takes to open a webpage.
Bookmark
- A way to save a web site address so you can easily return to it again.
Bookmarks and favorites are commonly used for websites that are visited
frequently so that you do not have to remember the website address.
Chat Room
- A place on the Internet where you can ‘chat’ to other people. A lot of
chat rooms are organized by subject. If for instance you wanted to
discuss your favorite sports team, gardening…you could go into a chat
room about that subject. You can also go into private chat rooms where
you can speak to family and friends. This can be an inexpensive way to
stay in touch with family and friends.
Counter
- Some webpages have a counter on the bottom of their page. The purpose
of this is to ‘count’ the number of people that have visited the
website.
Email
- Electronic mail. Email allows you to send and receive messages over
the Internet to family and friends.
FAQ
- An acronym for Frequently Asked Questions. A lot of websites have FAQ
sections where they have a list of frequently asked questions and their
answers.
FTP
- An acronym for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is a tool you can use to
transfer documents to another computer or individual via the Internet.
FTP sites are websites that allow users to upload their documents to the
site and then allow someone else to download the document. FTP sites are
used when the document is to large to easily send via email or the data
is sensitive and users want to ensure that no one else has access to it
as most FTP sites are password protected.
ISP
- An acronym for Internet Service Provider. An ISP is a company that
provides Internet access, Xplornet is an ISP.
LOL
- An acronym for Laugh out loud. People will sometimes use this in
emails or instant message conversations instead of typing out the full
words.
Spam
- Junk mail for email. Spam is unsolicited, unwanted emails, usually
sent to try to get the recipient to buy something. Spamming is when the
same email is sent to a large quantity of people at once.
Surfing
- Also called web surfing. This is when you are just looking around the
Internet.
Trojan Horse
- Much like the Trojan Horse in Greek Mythology. Trojan Horse viruses
are disguised as something else, like a game. While the person plays the
game the virus deletes files on the computer.
URL
- An acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. This is what a websites
address is called.
Viruses
- Viruses are programs or software that are created with the intention
of causing harm to your computer. They can be sent via email or
downloaded from the Internet. Some viruses are a nuisance but will not
cause any serious damage while other viruses will delete files on your
computer and render it useless until the virus is removed and software
re-loaded.
Webpage
- Part of a website, a website is comprised of several webpages. Every
time you click on a link you are taken to a new webpage.
WWW
- An acronym for World Wide Web. Most website addresses start with www. |
