Technology
The Ka-band service, powered by
Telesat, is unlike other technologies because it uses a "spot
beam" approach to deliver satellite broadband access. In Canada,
Telesat uses 15 regional spot beams to provide national
broadband coverage. The effect of using spot beams is a more
concentrated signal, which results in smaller dish sizes and
affordable service package pricing for the end user.
The Ka-band service provides
various data transfer speeds and price points to satisfy a wide
range of home or business user requirements
Equipment
In order to receive the Ka-band
service powered by Telesat, the customer must have an outdoor
unit (ODU) - small satellite dish (67 cm) - affixed somewhere on
the premises as well as an indoor unit (IDU) - satellite modem -
which is connected to the customer's computer.
